2. Segmental Theory:
  • Unified set of theories dealing with specific aspects of career development
  • Taken from developmental, differential, social, personality, and phenomenological psychology 
  • Held together by self-concept and learning theory
  • Career choice is a process, not an event
  • Career counselors should focus attention on how work roles interact with other life roles.
  • Needs to be provided to individuals of all ages and circumstances
  • Counselors need to help clients understand that they are not venturing outside of normalcy if they cycle back to early development stages
  • Counselors must learn how to use life stages and tasks to make diagnoses and select appropriate intervention strategies
  • Five stages of development 
    1. Growth (birth-14)
    2. Exploration (15-24)
    3. Establishment (25-44)
    4. Maintenance (45-64)
    5. Decline (65+)
  • Six different roles that people will recycle through during their lifetime
    1. Child
    2. Student
    3. Worker
    4. Citizen
    5. Homemaker
    6. Leisurite
